Orangeville’s Fare Free Transit pilot program is set to wrap up in a few months.
Local transit riders will soon learn if free rides will continue, as Town Council will receive an update and make a decision on the program’s future during a meeting next week.
The Fare Free Transit initiative has led to a significant jump in ridership, more than doubling the number of passengers from previous years.
In 2023, over 225,000 people used the service compared to just over 101,000 riders in 2022.
Town staff is recommending an extension until 2027 to gather more data and see the full financial impact, especially from gas tax revenue, which has shown promise as ridership grows.
Council will review data on ridership, operating costs, and feedback from transit users to determine whether the program should continue.
