A remarkable textile art installation celebrating diversity was unveiled today at the Milton Public Library.
The quilt is part of “The Fabric of Our Being,” an ambitious project by artist Nadine Williams to see 1,000 quilts hung locally, regionally, and internationally.
It debuted before an audience inside the Milton Public Library’s Main branch. This project was first launched in 2017 to celebrate the International Decade for People of African Descent. Since then, quilts have been installed at various locations, including a York Regional Police building, the City of Vaughan offices, Toronto’s Union Station, and several school boards.
The quilt features a composite design created by local youth artists. It combines elements representing Canada, Africa, and cultural heritage. The central panel prominently displays the words “The Fabric of Our Being” above an image of the African continent intertwined with the provinces of Canada. Surrounding this central image are numerous quilt squares, each uniquely crafted to represent personal stories, cultural heritage, and individual identities.
After the unveiling, Williams spoke to the gathered audience, sharing a song and her poetry. She emphasized that an installation like this in a public space is about inspiring the community, particularly young people. Williams also highlighted the significance of the unveiling occurring on Emancipation Day, a day that commemorates the abolition of slavery in the British Empire. She underscored the importance of remembering and honoring the struggles and resilience of those who fought for freedom and equality.
Sarah Douglas-Murray, CEO and Chief Librarian of the Milton Public Library, expressed her gratitude.
“I’m so thankful for everyone being here today [to share in the importance of] this event…[This] goes beyond artistic expression, it serves as a powerful platform for storytelling, healing, and empowerment.”
She also noted that the quilt will be prominently displayed for all to see in the MPL’s main branch.
The event stands as a testament to the power of art in fostering unity and celebrating diversity within the community.
