I’ve been on a roll with reading lately!
With Waubgeshig Rice coming to Milton for ‘One Book, One Milton’, I flew through his two big books, ‘Moon of the Crusted Snow’ and ‘Moon of the Turning Leaves’.
I tend to run hot and cold with reading. I could read six books in a month or go six months to read one book.
What was the last book you read?
Let me know!

What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – Here’s where you should (and should not) swim in Halton
It has been a hot summer, and you might be looking for ways to cool down. You can head to the beach, but you might be wondering, “Is this water sanitary? It looks questionable to me!” Halton Region has done their homework and have kept up with regular water checks at nine beaches across the area. Six of the nine beaches were determined to be unsafe for swimming. Here in Milton, Kelso Beach was sampled and found to be safe, as is the new waterpark there. The Region cautions that things can change day-to-day and even hour-to-hour thanks to rainfall and other factors, so always use caution. The rule they have is if you can’t see you feet while standing in waist high water as an adult, don’t go swimming!
Daily WTF – Fish falls from sky and damages New Jersey couple’s Tesla in driveway
You’ve heard of raining cats and dogs, but what about fish? A fish fell from the sky in New Jersey and shattered a car’s windshield. The car was parked in the driveway over the weekend. When the couple who owned the car noticed the damage, they went back and checked the tape to see the moment it happened… They were not prepared for the footage! It’s believed the fish was picked up from a nearby bay by a bird. This bird must have carried the fish for about a mile before it was dropped onto the Tesla. Poor fish! What a way to go out…
Daily Did You Know – PETA unveils “memorial” billboard in Milton for chickens killed in Highway crash
In case you were wondering if PETA was serious about this, they were! PETA has unveiled their “memorial” billboard for the chickens who were killed in a crash on the 401 earlier this month. The sign reads “I’m ME, not MEAT,” and shows a picture of a chicken. No word on how long the sign will be up but you can find it at the intersection of James Snow Parkway and Main Street East, near the plaza. Ironically enough, there’s a lot of restaurants in that plaza, including a McDonald’s… If online feedback is anything to be acknowledged, I’d imagine a lot of Chicken McNugget meals will be ordered after people see the sign.

Federal government announces affordable housing funding for Halton, surrounding areas
Affordable housing is getting some attention from the federal government. Earlier this week, the feds announced $97 million will go towards affordable housing in Halton, Hamilton, and Niagara. This will help build 270 new homes and lead to the repairs of 8,399 homes. As someone who grew up in Co-op housing, and now lives in a world where it seems impossible to ever own a home, I’m all for affordable housing. Hopefully this kind of stuff continues!
Timothée Chalamet sings Bob Dylan in film trailer
We have our first real look at Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan. Musician biopic movies continue to be pumped out, and they’re doing well! Elvis, Queen, Elton John, Tina Turner – these movies have done great at the box office and at award shows. Will Chalamet be the next one? The first trailer for ‘A Complete Unknown’ has been released, and it gives us an idea of what Chalamet sounds like as Bob Dylan. Here’s him singing. What do you think? Does he live up to it? I think this will be good! He looks a lot like Bob Dylan, and he sounds a lot like him to me. We’ll see how it actually goes. ‘A Complete Unknown’ will be released this December.
GOOD NEWS – East Baltimore small houses offer opportunity for homeless people
Baltimore has really struggled over the years. As homelessness continues to be an issue affecting the city, they’re looking for solutions. A developer has gone out of their way to make a grouping of small houses in East Baltimore that will offer an opportunity for struggling families. They are small, coming in at 480-square-foot, but they’re going for just $25,000. With a waitlist of 600 families, there’s clearly a market for this kind of thing. That could mean more will be developed in the future, and that could mean other cities give it a try… And that’s some good news!
Celine Dion & Lady Gaga Will Perform At Olympics Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics will have quite the mini-concert. Announced yesterday as performers, viewers and attendees will get a chance to hear Lady Gaga and Celine Dion sing live. The duo is expected to perform together. The rest of the performance lineup is being kept secret so far, with artists like Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande rumoured to be there. It’s all happening tomorrow – so we’ll see who will be there real soon.
Adele to take a break from music
I can’t imagine it’s easy being a famous celebrity, let alone to the degree of being one of the biggest pop singers on the planet. At her Las Vegas residency during one of her shows, Adele announced recently that she is looking to take a break. The main reason she cited was that she’s not enjoying being famous. She finds her current life emotionally draining and misses when she wasn’t ADELE, you know? He residency is expected to finish this year, and she’ll also be going on a mini-tour overseas. After that, it seems it’s breaktime for Adele. Hopefully she gets to relax, recharge, and maybe write a few breakup songs in her time off. Is that too much to ask for?
