The Royal Canadian Mint has released a new $2 coin to mark the passing of Canada’s recently deceased head of state, Queen Elizabeth II.
The coin, which was unveiled on Wednesday, is similar to the existing toonie; the polar bear on one side and an image of the Queen on the other are still present, but the new exterior will be sporting black nickel.
“Like a mourning band, the black outer ring surrounds the polar bear design at the centre of the coin’s reverse,” the mint said.
According to the Mint, nearly five million coins will enter circulation later in December and will start showing up gradually as banks re-stock their $2 coin inventories.
