Rockne Harmon is still shaking his head.
The retired California prosecutor who served as a DNA specialist in O.J. Simpson’s murder trial, doesn’t believe laws around familial DNA will ever change in Canada.
Harmon says investigators are doing families of homicide victims a disservice by continuing to use techniques such as DNA sweeps that have never proved to be successful.
Harmon spoke to myFM News after reading an update on the Sonia Varaschin homicide case and the lead detective’s “submissive acceptance” of the status quo.
Canada’s DNA Identification Act prohibits the use of familial DNA searches. Harmon has challenged law officials to test it’s use, but doesn’t think anyone ever will.
He adds that familial DNA has been very successful south of the border helping solve cold cases dating back decades.
