Orangeville mayor Sandy Brown is under fire for cc’ing media in an email reply to Orangeville Police Association president Doug Fry.
Late last week, Fry sent Brown and the rest of town council an email with a link to an article about OPP in Midland.
In response, Brown, who also chairs the police services board, noted he was aware of members of the association being “muzzled and threatened with Discreditable Conduct Investigations” by senior management for comments or support of OPP.
The mayor also disclosed information regarding an Orangeville Police Service (OPS) professional standards investigation against Fry in relation to ‘Keep Orangeville Police Service (KOPS)’ signs that he says has been stalled for five months.
OPS senior management say it won’t comment on Brown’s allegations or the investigation into Fry.
In response to Brown’s email, Fry said “I find it troubling that you as the Mayor and Chair of the Police Services Board would put confidential information out to the media about ongoing investigations before the facts are investigated and substantiated as fact.”
“I guess in your world, like President Trump, you feel you can say and do things without impunity,” he added.
Councillor Todd Taylor, who is vice chair of the police board, says he has great respect for mayor Brown, but was disappointed in his email.
“I am continually amazed at all of the wonderful initiatives he puts forth to make our town a better place. That said, the comments he made this week regarding our local police force are not helpful for our town. The words are divisive and wish the Mayor had kept his perspective on the situation to himself.”
