Halton District School Board (HDSB) students delivered an impressive performance at the 2025 Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) last month.
Out of 123 student entries, 70 projects earned awards, racking up $17,965 in cash prizes and an incredible $70,000 in scholarships thanks to generous sponsors and donors.
Two standout projects are heading to the International Science & Engineering Fair, and 10 others will compete at the Canada-Wide Science Fair. Notably, Grade 9 student Evan Budz from Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School won the Best in Fair Pinnacle Award for his autonomous bionic sea turtle robot, and Grade 12 student Anish Rathod of Burlington Central High School earned Third Best in Fair for his pipe inspection innovation.
“The Halton District School Board is incredibly proud of our students, not only for the outstanding results at BASEF, but for the creativity, dedication and innovative thinking they brought to their projects,” says Curtis Ennis, Director of Education for the HDSB. “Their accomplishments highlight the remarkable talent of our students in STEM and underscore the role this important learning plays in sparking curiosity and innovation.”
This success reflects the goals of the HDSB’s 2024-2028 Multi-Year Strategic Plan, which focuses on connecting student learning to real-world challenges and preparing them for the future.
