The Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is warning residents of ongoing flooding across Dufferin County, with particular focus on the Town of Grand Valley, the Township of Amaranth (Waldemar) and the Township of East Garafraxa. Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms this past weekend have led to localized flooding, and the situation is still ongoing.
Flood warnings remain in effect, and local officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
Important Reminder:
- If you are using a gas-powered generator or water pump, ensure the area is well-ventilated to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Please exercise caution when using these devices indoors or in enclosed spaces.
- RPAS (drone) activity will commence as local officials fly drones to assess flood damage. Do not be alarmed if you see drones in the sky, this is part of the damage assessment process.
- Sandbags are being filled to prepare for future flooding should the situation worsen.
- Stay Away from Waterways: Due to rising water levels, it’s essential to stay away from all waterways. Keep pets and children at a safe distance from flood-prone areas to avoid potential accidents and drowning risks.
Photo Safety Reminder: We know many of you are eager to capture the devastating sights of the floodwaters but remember, getting too close to danger can put your life at risk, as well as the safety of our first responders. People hanging off signs and bridges to get that perfect shot is not a smart decision. Always prioritize safety and keep in mind: no photo is worth compromising your well-being.
Dufferin OPP will continue to provide photos for everyone from a safe distance. There is no need to put yourself or anyone else at risk when you can see all the flooding safely.
Water Testing: If your property has been affected by flooding, test your water to ensure it is safe for consumption. Floodwaters can contaminate wells and drinking water, and testing helps to avoid potential health risks.
Plan Accordingly: If you live in a flood-prone area, it is essential to take proactive steps to protect your property. Local authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
The Dufferin OPP encourages all residents to remain vigilant and follow the guidance of local officials. By staying prepared and informed, we can ensure the safety of our community during this severe weather event.
