An arrest has been made following an armed shoplifting incident at a Burlington grocery store.
On Wednesday, September 4th, at 1:53 p.m. a man entered the Fortinos at 2515 Appleby Line in Burlington where he stole a variety of grocery items. Loss prevention officers attempted to arrest the man; however, the suspect fled to the parking lot attempting to make his escape in a vehicle, but managed to collide with a second vehicle. The man then exited his vehicle and brandished a knife towards employees that were attempting to intervene. With the assistance of loss prevention officers and bystanders, the man was subdued and held for the police. Two Fortinos employees and one civilian suffered minor injuries during the altercation.
24-year-old Omar Abugalib of Hamilton has been charged with the following:
- Theft Under $5000
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Assault with a Weapon (three counts)
- Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
Abugalib was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
