Well, I picked quite the week to take a vacation… What a week of news it’s been!
Spending the last 10 or so days in Florida has me wanting to ask you the question:
As a Canadian, how much does American news play a factor in your life?
I’m talking like, Donald Trump surviving an assassination attempt; or, Joe Biden backing out from the 2024 US election. Are you following this stuff constantly or are you flippant about US news?
Let me know!

What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – The Waldie Blacksmith Shop Gets A Fresh Coat of Paint
Who says history doesn’t need a makeover? The Waldie Blacksmith Shop in Milton has received a fresh coat of paint, or as my dad says, “a fresh paint of coat.” This is thanks to an $80,000 grant from the Town of Milton Community Fund. The home base for the Milton Historical Society, and long-running local museum and blacksmith shop have received money through the fund before, having updated their walkway in the past. From what I’ve seen, it looks good!
Daily WTF – Taco Bell is opening an ‘early retirement community’ for people of all ages
You’re never too young to retire and Taco Bell is hoping you ‘Live Mas’ in more ways than one. Announced recently was the opening of “The Cantinas,” an ‘early retirement community’ created by Taco Bell that will be a “particularly unique weekend getaway.” It’s being launched in San Diego, California, and will highlight the leisurely lifestyle of seniors without any age restrictions. It officially opens next month for one weekend only, and if things go well, they might just bring it back in other locations.
Daily Did You Know – Milton Mayor Gord Krantz Elaborates on Opposition to CN Intermodal Hub in Follow-Up Interview
You might recall a couple of weeks ago now that Milton Mayor Gord Krantz issued a spicy email to members of the Milton Chamber of Commerce. It regarded his stance on the CN Intermodal Hub, and the stance (or lack thereof) of the Milton Chamber on the matter. Our very own Drew Behm got ahold of our mighty mayor, and got him to elaborate on his points and add to them. He goes over why the Hub is happening, and how he feels the negatives vastly outweigh the positives of this hub in this particular community.

Nelly Furtado is having a COMEBACK
This might be strange for everyone who lived through 2006 when Nelly Furtado was one of the biggest musicians on the planet, but it’s now 2024 and the Canadian singer is having the comeback you never knew you needed. Prior to this year, she was probably most recently trending for her AWKWARD rendition of ‘Oh Canada’ at the 2016 NBA All-Star game in Toronto. Now, after making a few award show appearances, she’s back on the fabled island of relevancy for people and she’s making one heck of a comeback. She recently teased a new song, a remix of Tate McRae’s Greedy. We might be hearing more from Nelly REAL SOON.
GOOD NEWS – This trash robot is cleaning up Michigan’s shores, keeping plastic out of the Detroit River
It always feels like news outlets are showing the technological advancements in robots and how we’re inching closer and closer to the first Terminator movie. Robots jumping over obstacle courses and doing perfect backflips, all with human skin can be terrifying, but it’s not all bad! A little robot is being put to work on the shores of Michigan, helping clean plastic out of the Detroit River. Described as Roomba-esque, ‘BeBot’ is going around Belle Isle beach and sifting through the sand. When it comes across litter, it picks it up and disposes of it. Maybe one day every beach on the planet will have a little BeBot of their own, helping keep the planet litter-free… And that’s some good news!
One year since Barbenheimer: A look back at an iconic week in cinema history
Over the weekend, people celebrated the one-year anniversary of a movie event that very few ever saw coming. If you recall, last summer, the biggest thing on the planet was a double film release. Coming out on the same day was the pink and sparkly ‘Barbie’ movie, and the dark and moody ‘Oppenheimer’ biopic. Both went on to have global success with people making it a thing to see both polar-opposite flicks on the same day. Barbie made over a billion dollars and Oppenheimer seemingly won every award that ever existed. Now that we’re roughly 365 days out from Barbenheimer first starting, I’ll ask: Have you seen both movies? Which did you prefer? I’ll be honest… I’m a Barbie guy myself. IT WAS MORE FUN! It was an amazing movie. I still enjoyed Oppenheimer, but I if I had to choose between ‘fun colourful comedic romp’ and ‘men talking in a room’, I’ll be honest, it’s Barbie every time! What about you? Let me know!
LCBO workers ratify tentative agreement, strike ends Monday
Well, the wait is over! Roughly 10,000 LCBO workers will head back to the stores tomorrow after striking a deal with Ontario Premier Doug Ford and the Provincial Government. This comes after a strike kicked off earlier this month. LCBO stores have closed ever since and grocery stores seemingly struggled to keep up with the uptick in demand for alcohol. It seems it all worked out for the striking workers, as they’ll get an 8% pay raise over the next three years, and roughly 1,000 workers will be converted to full time. There’s also expected to be no store closures over the course of the agreement. Congrats to the workers, and hopefully everything goes back to normal after this.
Shawn Mendes teases new music
It’s been a little bit, but we could be getting new music from Toronto’s Shawn Mendes! Believe it or not, but Mendes last released a new album in 2020! We were just about to start our second lockdown when Mendes released ‘Wonder’ which went platinum. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that this means we get new Shawn Mendes in the coming weeks or months.
