What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – The history behind Milton’s Lloyd Landing and Powadiuk Place
With the election coverage taking up a lot of airtime the last week or so, we decided to hold off Street Name Monday and have Street Name Tuesday this week! Each week, we speak with Milton Historical Society President John Challinor about the origins of local street names. This week, we have a street connected to Milton’s Crawford Lake, as well as a street named after a former councillor back when Halton Region was first created. Two more streets will be touched on next week!
Daily WTF – Scarborough woman wants answers after being told she is dead
Imagine being told that you already died? That’s gotta be a trip. This is what happened to Susan Johnson in the UK. She went to the hospital for a scan, and while there, the staff told her that their records show her as deceased. Johnson’s now looking for answers because, last time she checked, she’s still very much alive. She wasn’t even able to get the scan that she went in for, they just said goodbye! The worst part was her medical benefits were discontinued because of this slip-up, which affected Johnson while she cared for her disabled husband. It’s unknown what exactly happened, and who is at fault, but Johnson continues to go through the stages to show the British government that she’s still breathing… Which has to be such a weird process…
Daily Did You Know – Applications open for renamed Milton Community Connections Grant
The Milton Small Grant Program is back! Well, kind of, actually. The Town of Milton has renamed the program as the ‘Milton Community Connections Grant’. It serves the same purpose in providing local residents, groups, and organizations with funding for projects that help the community. Applicants can receive up to $2500 on a first come, first served basis. There’s a pool of $75,000 available, and once that runs out, the tap runs out this year. This money is provided through the quarterly payments from OLG for having a casino in Campbellville. If you’re looking for money for a local project, apply now!
Everything you need to know ahead of the Milton by-election
Tomorrow is election day for the Milton by-election. Starting today, there’s an advertising blackout for the election, so I don’t think I can go into specifics about candidates or anything. Just know, voting day is tomorrow. By 9pm tomorrow night, we’ll hopefully know who our next MPP is for Milton.
Oakville resident is the latest local lottery winner
An Oakville man is the latest local to win the lottery. Affectionately known as ‘Sun’, he paid a dollar to get ENCORE on his lottery ticket, and that turned into $100,000 last month. The retiree says the money will go towards his helping his kids and a trip to visit his siblings. He bought his ticket at the Circle K on Speers Road in Oakville.
Your ‘it’s gonna be May’ memes are in NSYNC’s group chat, Joey Fatone says
Fans of the 90s boyband NSYNC have been waiting all April to post their “It’s Gonna Be May” memes. And it’s finally May! Happy May 1st to everybody. Today is also the 11th anniversary of when I met my now wife in our final year of high school. With yesterday being our 2nd wedding anniversary, Happy Double Anniversary to Kirsten Wilkinson. Anyway, “It’s Gonna Be May” has been an ongoing meme over the years. It uses the lyrics of the NSYNC song ‘It’s Gonna Be Me’ and is posted throughout April. It turns out, the members of the boyband love seeing the memes, and Joey Fatone says, they even share them every year in their group chat. So, just know, even Justin Timberlake finds it funny… And also, it’s May.
GOOD NEWS – $1.3 Billion Powerball Jackpot Winner Is A Cancer Patient
You always hope that whoever wins these massive Powerball lotteries truly deserves winning the money. Last month, the Powerball jackpot reached $1.3 billion. It was finally won by someone! All that money is going to Cheng “Charlie” Saephan. The thing with Charlie winning the money is that he’s actually currently battling cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. When asked what he was going to do with the money, Charlie told reporters he was looking forward to finding “a good doctor…” The 46-year-old will now have the best that money can buy – and that is some good news!
What could go wrong? Australian billionaire plans to build Titanic II, again
If you’re someone who is obsessed with the glitz and glam of the tales of the Titanic, you’re be excited to know that a sequel is coming! No, not a movie, but a second ship! Australian billionaire Clive Palmer wants to use his money to recreate the Titanic voyage. The mining mogul has been trying for years to get this project off the ground, and it seems he believes the third time is the charm for this one… And that’s not including the fact that the first Titanic hit an iceberg and sank more than 100 years ago. They’ll be recreating the entire ship to look like the first one, and plans to set sail in June 2027. Hopefully they’ve developed iceberg blocking technology over the last 112 years, because I don’t think Titanic II will win that fight otherwise.
Canadian dog removed from job for being too fat
If you’ve ever been let go from a job, you know it’s not a great feeling. For Sammy the Service Dog in Mississauga, I’m sure he could be feeling better. For the last five years, he’s been the service dog for the family of an autistic child. In the five years that Sammy worked for them, he saw his weight balloon from a healthy 83 pounds up to 129 pounds. It’s alleged that the family was not taking good enough care of the dog by not taking him on enough walks and overfeeding him. The matter was brought to court and the poor guy was removed from the home. Good news: since being placed in proper care, Sammy has lost seven pounds… Just in time for beach season!
