The Town of Orangeville has proclaimed the month of April as Sikh Heritage Month.
April was selected due to its importance to the Sikh community.
Vaishiki, celebrated in mid-April, commemorates when the Sikh faith was formed, as well as the Khalsa, a community of initiated Sikhs.
It also marks the start of the Punjabi New Year.
During Sikh Heritage Month, members of the community are encouraged to celebrate and educate future generations about the continued role the Sikh Community plays in our province and our town.
Sikh Flag Raising Comittee Member Narinder Singh says Sikhism advocates for Equality, Social Justice, Service to Humanity and Tolerance For Other Religons.
