Orangeville native Paige Burns, 22, started her athletic career rowing at the Island Lake Rowing Club, and then collegiately at Trent University.
But it’s her potential a sport new to her – Track Cycling – that’s earned her a spot in the Canadian Olympic Committee’s annual cross-country talent search.
“It is a privilege to have this opportunity,” said Burns when she learned she had been selected for the final.
“I’m looking forward to focusing mentally & physically on my fitness with the appropriate training to achieve greatness, and to give it all I have. As well I’m looking forward to meeting new people in Ottawa, creating new friendships, and networking with Olympians.”
Over the past several months, more than 1,500 athletes from a wide range of sports participated in free local qualifier events across the country; Performing core speed, strength, power and endurance tests in front of Olympic talent scouts to find the sport for which they are most suited.
“Paige is a former collegiate rower who took the leap this fall to try out at the RBC Training Ground event in Guelph, and then compete at the Elite Canadian National track championships as her first ever bike race,” said Tanya Dubnicoff, advancement camp coach for Cycling Canada.
“Her learning focused attitude allowed her to make the most of the situation, and we’re excited to put her name forward for [this] opportunity.” Dubnicoff continued.
Burns and the other finalists will now compete in the national final in Ottawa on October 22nd.
Competitors have the chance of being one of 30 athletes selected to earn funding, a spot on Team Canada, and an accelerated path to the Olympics.
