After a drawn out process, plot twists and all, Shelburne council has voted to disband the Shelburne Police Service.
In a special meeting Wednesday night, council made the decision.
The story begins last term, when the preceding council received a report indicating the existing Shelburne Police facility no longer served the force’s needs. That council decided to undergo a police costing review.
Having been in the middle of that review, the current council picked up the task and last summer, opted to renovate the police station at a price of $3.9 million, thus keeping SPS.
Then in December, council received intel that the disbandment of Orangeville Police would create residual costs for SPS, which prompted council to seek another police costing review.
Mayor Wade Mills noted, this time around, a transition to OPP was inevitable.
Shelburne will pay about $3.3 million in policing costs and startup fees in the first year under the OPP.
