A southwestern Ontario telecom company is investing into a $56 million fiber optic project in Orangeville that’ll give the town’s internet quality a boost.
Starting this fall, Wightman Communications Ltd. is laying down 350,000 meters of underground fibre optic cable in Orangeville’s industrial park.
Mayor Sandy Brown says Orangeville isn’t putting any funds towards the project but is receiving some money from Wightman to map out the town’s underground network.
As COVID-19 has forced many Orangeville residents to work from home and have been eating up more internet data, some have reported being victims of price-gouging by large telecom companies.
Brown hopes an addition of internet service providers in town will increase competition that’ll put an end to inflated internet bills.
While businesses will get first dibs, Wightman will begin servicing residential customers next year and the telecom plans to open a retail location in Orangeville next year as well.
