Red dresses have recently adorned municipal property in Orangeville.
As of Wednesday (Feb.19) morning, red dresses were hanging from trees along the median on Broadway.
Town clerk, Karen Landry says she hasn’t received any complaints about the dresses nor does she know where they came from.
But it’s a trend seen across the country, including on the streets of Toronto.
Those dresses are a part of the Red Dress Project, a campaign started by Winnipeg Metis artist, Jaime Black, who seeks to highlight missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada.
Her website states the installations aim to “draw attention to the gendered and racialized nature of violent crimes against Aboriginal women and to evoke a presence through the marking of absence.”
In an email to myFM News, the town says “Public Works will be removing the dresses from Town property as there was no approval by the Town to place them on public property. The Town will not take a political stance on the matter. Given that no complaints have been received nor do they pose a safety concern, Town staff will remove the dresses as time permits.”
