COUNTY LOOKING INTO ADDING MORE BEDS AT DUFFERIN OAKS
3/12/2018 9:54:41 AM

Dufferin County will explore the possibility of adding more beds at Dufferin Oaks.

Mono Mayor and chair of Dufferin's community services committee, Laura Ryan, says first they need to know if the long-term care facility in Shelburne can accommodate more beds.

With an aging population and a lengthy wait-list, Ryan says the county needs to be thinking ahead.

The county-owned facility currently has 160 beds and the wait time is 481 days, according to recent data from the Central West Local Health Integration Network.

In Dufferin-Caledon there a more than 800 people on the wait-list for long-term care beds.

Last month, Ontario's PC Party and MPP Sylvia Jones called on the newly appointed Minister of Health and Long Term Care to address the failure to provide adequate long term care for Ontario's seniors.

Jones shared the story of a 93-year-old Belfountain man who had to go to London to find a long-term care placement.

She says the consequence of long wait-lists put incredible stress on family members who are trying to find a placement for their loved one.
