12/5/2017 10:46:19 AM

An Ontarian man killed more than 4,000 km away from home is the father of a Shelburne firefighter.

The man killed in Trinidad and Tobago last Friday (Dec. 1) has been identified as 56-year-old Vishnu Narine of Brampton. He is the father of Shelburne firefighter Randy Narine.

Trinidadian media report that Vishnu was shot and robbed while on vacation to his home country. Randy tells CTV Barrie that he was carrying the equivalent of C$1,900.

Shelburne Fire Chief Brad Lemaich says his department is deeply saddened by the news.

Randy, who is in Trinidad to support his family, says a funeral for his father will be held in Trinidad on Wednesday (Dec. 6).
