OCTOBER IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH; DCAFS INVITES SPEAKER TO SHARE HER STORY
10/12/2017 2:47:38 PM

Dufferin Child and Family Services (DCAFS) is breaking the silence on child abuse.

October is Child Abuse Prevention month and the organization recently held a presentation, where they invited speaker Wendy Cook to share her story about being physically, sexually, and emotionally abused as a child.

myFM had a chance to speak with Cook and one of the things that she wants people to know is that there aren't any telltale signs of an abuser.

Cook says it was a very different world when she was a child, so she says she is working very hard to bring awareness to the kinds of services that are available to help those who are victims of abuse.

She says getting help made a difference in her life.

In addition, Cook says it's her mission to continue the conversation around abuse and to stop people from just being bystanders.

Cook donated $10,000 to DCAFS to thank them for the work that they do and to help them continue to provide critical services.

Throughout the month of October there will be purple flags in front of DCAFS. These flags represent the children and youth in Dufferin County who have received help from Child Protection.
