1.8 MILLION ONTARIANS MISTAKENLY BELIEVE THEY ARE REGISTERED DONORS 4/17/2017 10:02:25 AM
According to the Trillium Gift of Life Network, 7,500 Orangeville residents mistakenly believe they are registered tissue and organ donors.
Today, there are 1,500 patients in Ontario waiting for an organ transplant.
Orangeville resident Michael Steele is one of those patients waiting for a kidney.
Steele was lucky once already, receiving a heart in 2009.
For patients like Steele, an organ transplant is their only treatment option, and every three days someone will die because they did not get their transplant in time.
April is Be A Donor Month.
The Trillium Gift of Life Network says one donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation.
It is encouraging you to check your donor registration status.
You can check on the back of your health card or at beadonor.ca.
Signed paper donor cards are obsolete and don't qualify you as a registered donor.
